Homeschool Animal Study - Classification

We are done with our lessons on the human body and have started our study on animals for science. There are so many ideas out there, that this study has been a breeze to prepare for.

We started with making a poster for our wall. We had one with our human body studies and it was great for conversation over dinner. The kids always talk about what they were learning with Daddy and the poster always helped them to remember. Their friends ask alot of questions when they come over about our school wall and it gives the kiddos a chance to talk about it with peers as well.  I highly recommend it!

We read through the pages on animal classification in DK First Animal Encyclopedia . It is an excellent book for elementary age kids. We also skimmed through The Animal Kindgom: A Guide to Vertebrae Classification and Biodiversity by Kate Whyman. This book is a great book with amazing photography, but the read is a lil to much for my kiddos. We read what I thought to be most important for learning classification at this age.

First Animal Encyclopedia
(wonderful!!)

Next we did our very first lapbook!!
And I ask  myself, "Why have we not done this before?!?"
It was so much fun.

We used a template I found on Homeschool Share

I printed off a few animals for each animal class that they colored and put in the appropriate envelope in their lapbooks so they could practice classifying.

When we study a new animal over the next few months, we will get our lapbooks out and classify each animal as we learn about them.

That is all for now, I will post more as we do more.
